The office of the crowning is the climax of the Wedding Service. The crowns conform to Biblical teachings that God bestows His blessing upon His children in the form of crowns. They are the visible signs of the glory and honor with which God crowns the couple during the Sacrament. The crowns also identify the couple as the beginning of a new settlement, a new kingdom in Christianity.
The Priest takes the crowns from the altar table and holding them above the groom and bride, blesses each three times. The crowns are joined together with a ribbon as another symbol that the two are now one. The Koumbaro exchanges the crowns back and forth three times as a witness to the sealing of the matrimonial union. This exchange represents the interweaving of the lives of the bridal pair.
